Forest Gump

This movie was directed by Robert Zemeckis, the movie was produced by the studio The Tisch Company.

From the title of this movie I can tell that the narrative will focused mainly on one character and the challenges he faces, these challenges that he faces will determine the rest of his life. Looking at the title from the word 'Gump' I can see that this main character will be foolish and dumb-witted, The narrative will be based on his progression throughout, and him developing as a person and fitting into society. 'Forest Gump' This shows that this character wont have many social skills, and struggles in todays age, due to the nature of the word forest, he will be a suppressed character who has a had a difficult child hood.

The opening scene start with a tracking of an insignificant object, this tracking of the feather is in deep focus, which allows the audience to see the environment and the town this is set in. It is shown this is a town by there being a bell tower and no skyscrapers, this town has old buildings which look to be from the 1960s. Furthermore, the cars are older models showing that this opening scene is set in the later 90s. The lighting of this opening scene is light which sets the peaceful tone of the movie, the feather has a parallel non-diegetic soundtrack playing, this sets the tone of this movie, which relates to a light hearted drama, due to the feather connoting to a peaceful and innocent object.

We are introduce to the main character, this is shown by the long camera time he gets, connoting to the movie basing around this character. Looking at this characters outfit I can infer that he is not socially aware, this is shown by the little correlation his outfit has compared to his shoes, his shoes are dirty and messy whereas the rest of his outfit is smart and clean. This character is shown to be peaceful as well as the main focus due to the feather landing beside his shoe, we can tell that this character has a disability of some sort due to his shaky hand and body motions. The character is shown to be very OCD also due to the state of his baggage, with everything being folded and put in neatly, this could connote to him living with his parents, as this sort of packing only comes from mothers. Looking at the facial expression on 'Forest Gump' throughout this opening scene I can infer that he struggles, due to the lack of confidence in his facial expression as well as him looking uncomfortable. The audience is engaged in this scene due to the lack of knowledge which we obtain throughout this opening scene, the first minute and a half of this opening scene is focused on a feather falling through the sky very slowly, which creates anticipation, makes the audience wonder what is going to happen next. The light hearted tone of this scene comes to the lightheartedness of the movie, which makes the audience feel relaxed, this is changed by the introduction of the character, where he doesn't even say a word, making us wonder what he is going to sound like.

In conclusion I think this opening scene does a good job in presenting this character as innocent, but with the lack of events taking place, I think that this could put a lot of people off it. This is due to the slow pace and long shot durat
ions of nothing particularly special. It is shown to be a little too lighthearted, which makes it unsuccessful when relating to the drama, it is possible for the audience to realise the problems that this character will face throughout but overall, the genre isn't shown in the most effective way.

Annihilation

The director of this movie is Alex Garland, who is a director known for sci-fi genre movies, this movie was released by the studio Paramount Pictures. Additionally, the star actor Natalie Portman stars in many space themed/sci-fi movies.

Based on the title of this movie, I can tell that it's going to be about a supernatural event that takes place on earth, this event will cause people to evacuate an area. This supernatural event will be because of something from out of space, possibly being a meteorite, bringing an unwanted life-form to this planet. This event will have the power to wipe out all of humanity if not dealt with, due to the name being 'annihilation'. The narrative will overview a character, or multiple, to go out and examine this phenomenon which a lot of these people will lose their lives.

The start of this scene opens with an isolated bland room, with two pieces of furniture present. The woman getting questioned is accompanied with three men all wearing hazmat suits, this shows that this woman has been exposed to something, this thing that she has been exposed to must be from different origins as there is also an armada of people watching her outside the big glass cased window all wearing protective gear also. The opening scene then cuts to a tracking camera shot of a meteor, which crashes into a lighthouse, this related to the sci-fi theme, because of the out of space origin of this unidentified object. The next scene shows a range of different scaly colours pulsating, which shows the supernatural element, the fires that come off the objects impact are rainbow, showing that this isn't any ordinary meteor.

We are introduced to a woman, who seems terrified and shook because of some event, we can tell that she is being interviewed about this traumatic experience, she is interviewed by a man wearing a full hazmat, showing that the thing she has been in contact with is something that hasn't been seen before. The scenes are long which relates to the mystery behind the characters, we are not told anything about this character in the opening scene, adding to the suspense behind what has happened to her. Furthermore, we are introduced to a supernatural life-form, this life-form doesn't have a physical appearence but we know it's alive and the movie is going to be based around it's effects.

This opening scene highlights the supernatural element, the woman has clearly been exposed to something outworldly, this causes her to be interviewed by people wearing full hazmat suits. We are not told anything about this character in this opening scene, which makes the audience question what has happened to this woman. This engages the audience and makes them want to watch more, furthermore this lack of knowledge we are given makes us think about what is going to happen, due to not being introduced to the supernatural events real form.

This opening scene is very effective due to the weird nature and setting, the non-diegetic soundtrack that plays in the background is contrapuntal, which adds to the odd tone of this scene. The uniqueness of this opening scene, showing us no back story, and a confused woman being interviewed as if she is an alien, shows the genre in which being sci-fi very clearly. This in my opinion is very successful, as it makes me want to watch more and to understand her backstory, and what happens next.

IT

This director of this film was Andres Muschetti, this film was produced by the New Line Cinema, Lin pictures, Vertigo Entertainment, KatzSmith Productions.

This opening scene we are introduced to the character George this scene starts with a high angle camera shot, presenting the kid as weak. George is shown to be innocent and a normal kid just having fun outside, also he's a liked person because of the interaction with the other character we are shown which we can assume is the brother. We are also introduced to the evil character who is a clown called 'Pennywise', we can tell he is a normal character also because of his weird and creepy nature, shown also by the tone of his voice. Due to the long screen time, I can tell these are both main characters. The kid also is shown as nieve as he knows he shouldn't talk to strangers, but he stays there anyway and even goes to crab his boat from a supernatural being in a drain.

Looking at the title of this movie 'IT' I can infer that this will be a film around a character of supernatural being, this being will either be hunted, or be the hunter. Furthermore, I can tell that this character will not be a friend, and will probably be represented to be against humans. This character will possibly be feared,  and have a vendetta against humans.

The lighting is dark and gloomy showing that something bad is going to happen as well as a scary tone, the kid is also wearing a generic yellow coat which signifies purity and innocence. The boy follows the boat down the stream with intense non-diegetic  music playing in the background until this paper boat goes into the dark manhole. The shot is then focused on the manhole where a character emerges out of nowhere, this appearance is accompanied with a pleonastic loud non-diegetic sound effect, this is in order to create a jump scare, connoting to a horror element. This character wears clown makeup and costume, this clown costume is also very scary and is clearly feared by the little boy. The opening scene ends on the kid reaching for his boat, and then it cuts to bloody righting of it with a loud eerie sound. This opening scene captures the distress and how uncomfortable the kid is talking to him, additionally the tone and slow long camera shots add to the horror tone of the scene.

The setting of this opening scene is shown to be in an American residence, this is shown by the style of the housing, I can also tell this is in the late 80s to 90s because of the models of cars.

The audience is engaged in this scene due to the suspense that is created from the long scenes, these long scenes make what happens next unpredictable. The opening scenes ending makes the audience want to watch more because of the cliff hanger, it makes us question what's going to happen next, is the boy ok? Does he live? Does he get pulled into the manhole? Furthermore, this opening scene doesn't show us much about the characters which makes us think whats going to happen next. Who will die and who will live...

From the opening scene I can see that it is a horror genre, this is successful due to the jump-scare and  loud errie noises throughout. Furthermore, I can tell this by the long lasting intense scenes that take place, creating suspense.

Extraction

We are introduce to one character in this opening scene of extraction, who is camera focused throughout the small fights, this long screen time shows that he is going to be the main character. We can tell he is brave and skill-full as he runs through two enemies like nothing, he then gets shot and is resilient with little reaction and just sits there taking the pain.

Based on the title of Extraction, the narrative will be based around a character, or multiple characters who are trying to leave, or escape a city that has a big push factor which makes them need to get away. Furthermore, it could be getting away from a group or a person with power over them, and their only option is to get away and find some place else where.

In the opening scene the established camera shot starts in a birds eye view, looking over a city which looks dull and desolate, boats crowd the water connoting to people trying to leave the city. The grey looking foggy city shows a dark tone, the buildings are dirty and all the windows are pitch black which shows that not many people live there, furthermore, all the cars are abandoned. The next scene into the action has a fast transition to a man wearing heavy army gear who seems to run through two enemies, then ends up getting shot. Sad non-diegetic parallel music starts to play in relation to the sad reality of the character who has just been shot. This opening scene captures the art of war, showing a decollate city with a battle taking place this is why the set genre is war.

The setting is in the middle of a city, which then cuts onto a bridge, the guns used are of modern military level, showing that this is set in the 20th century in an abandoned city which is undergoing war. The director of this movie was Sam Hargrave, and it was created by the studio AGBO Thematic Entertainment and India Take One productions T.G.I.M films.

From this opening scene I can tell straight away that the genre is that of war, this is due to the fast based military action scene which takes place on the bridge, therefor I can tell that this scene is successful and it captures the experience of war, as it has a dull tone with emotional music playing also.

The audience would be engaged throughout this scene, as it introduces the setting straight away, then it shows a fast paced scene which ends up in the character, who is famously played by Chris Hemsworth who is a very known actor. Therefor the audience watching the scene of him getting shot at the end would make them want to watch more, to find out what and who he's fighting for, and especially if he makes it out alive and well.
